FAQ

Is it really worth becoming a mechanic.

The answer depends on what you are looking for in life. If money is your goal, then you can answer "yes". But if you are searching for meaning and purpose, then you should not answer this question.

If you don’t possess any mechanics skills, you won’t be able to do it. You won't become rich from it. It's unlikely that you will be famous. And it's unlikely to change your life.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. Also, you would need to hire someone else to fix it if it broke down. This is why most people don’t bother. They find something else to do.

Let's sum it up: If you want to make a lot of money, then do so. But if you want to live a meaningful life, stay away from the mechanic's industry.

How long is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship

It takes three years to complete an apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic. It includes two years of school and two years as an apprentice. The first year is used to learn all aspects of the trade including safety procedures and theory. You'll also learn the safe and efficient use of tools during this first year. After the first year, a second year will be spent on-thejob training. This year you'll get experience in different trades. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The final year of this program is spent in obtaining qualifications and becoming certified in your field. These include NVQs or National Vocational Qualifications. These are earned after passing exams that cover specific topics in the industry. The HNCs (Higher National Certificates), on the other hand, cover general subjects like customer service and management. Finally, there are City & Guilds certificates that are offered for those who wish to become qualified in certain trades.

Does it really matter what college I choose?

Non, really. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

Is being an auto mechanic a promising career choice?

For those who are passionate about excellence, automotive is a rewarding industry. It is important to work hard and learn as much from others as you can in order to succeed in this industry.

Because you will be spending most of your time communicating with customers and employees, you will need excellent communication skills. It's important to be flexible and willing to travel. This will make commutes difficult.

Take classes at community colleges or universities if you're interested to work in automotive. Many schools have programs that are specifically tailored for students who are interested in automotive sales, repair, and customer service.

Mechanical engineering should be your first choice for a degree. It is possible to earn a bachelor’s degree in only four years.

Many companies will hire students straight out of college. It's a smart idea to begin looking for work while you have the opportunity to study part-time.

After your education is complete, you will probably need some training in order to become an automotive technician.

This means that you must pass the Automotive Service Excellence exam. This test covers topics such engine maintenance as brakes, steering, suspension, etc.

After passing the ASE exam, you can apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence license.

You can perform repairs on private cars by obtaining a license. You will be compensated based on how many services you performed.

Not all states require licensing. You will need a license if you want to work in a different state.

Some states don't issue licenses until after completing a certain amount of training. This may be the case for you.

What type of job is there for a car mechanic?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people consider becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

You will need to join a union if you want to work in a shop. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They might specialize in one area, such as brakes and tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages are not associated with any one dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many business owners prefer to be in control of their businesses than to delegate it to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

Unfortunately, finding a new job can be difficult. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

Is it hard to get a job working as an auto mechanic?

Yes, it is possible. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. To get your foot in front of the door, try applying for a few positions to see if any accept student applications. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. They might be happy to recommend someone.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
