FAQ

Is it worthwhile to become a mechanic?

The answer to this question depends on what you want from life if you are looking for money, then yes, but if you're looking for meaning and purpose, then no.

If you don’t have any mechanical skills, it’s pointless to get into it. It will just waste your time. It's not going make you millionaire. It will not make you famous. It's unlikely that it will change your life.

You'd need to spend years learning how everything works. This would mean that you would have to pay someone else for your car's repair. It's the reason most people don't bother. They find something more worthwhile.

Let's sum it up: If you want to make a lot of money, then do so. You can't live a meaningful existence if your goal is to make a living in the mechanic's business.

What qualifications are required to become a mechanic

To become a mechanic, you'll need to pass a series of exams. These exams include:

  • A general knowledge test
  • A practical exam
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests will ensure you are familiar with the fundamental concepts of mechanics and physics before starting to work as a mechanic.

You'll be eligible for work as a mechanic after you have passed the tests. You'll still need an apprenticeship. This will require you to learn the trade.

To learn all there is to know about fixing vehicles, you will need workshops and classes. You'll also have to work alongside experienced mechanics.

To be a successful mechanic, you will need to have a high degree of concentration and attention. You will need to pay careful attention to every aspect when repairing vehicles.

You'll need patience and persistence to become a successful mechanic. This may not be the career path that you want if you aren't able to follow directions.

This job is for you if you are passionate about cars and love fixing them.

To work as an automotive mechanic, do I need a degree? Do I have to study part-time?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Most employers prefer candidates who have studied for a full degree rather than those who haven't. It shows you are dedicated and have worked hard to achieve your goals.

However, it doesn't mean you can't still work while studying. Some universities allow students the flexibility to finish coursework during summer vacations and resume their studies later in year. Other universities permit students to take classes part-time during the school year.

What length is an automotive course?

A course in automotive lasts three years.

The first year focuses on theory and learning about cars. The second year is dedicated to practical training, where you will learn how to fix cars, drive them, and do other jobs around the car. You will spend the final year working in a local garage to gain real-world experience.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. Once you have registered, certain standards will be enforced.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It will not permit you to fix major engine issues.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. For instance, they may only be qualified to fix brakes or change tires.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This allows employers to pick the right candidates for their jobs.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

Independent garages can be just as good places to work, but this does not mean they are better. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

You can switch jobs easily. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

Unfortunately, finding a new job can be difficult. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

You might also consider the vehicle type you repair, and whether extra labor is charged.

How to Become an Automotive Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
