A tread should always align straight and parallel to the sides of the tire. If the tread pattern is not straight, it may indicate that the tread has separated. What is the job description for a mechanic in a car?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

You will need to join a union if you want to work in a shop. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

You can sell spare parts or do minor repairs with your license. It will not permit you to fix major engine issues.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who can specialize in a particular area of the car. They may be trained to replace or repair tires, or they may specialize in brakes.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. Employers are able to choose which candidates will best suit their position.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. This means that these jobs are usually more lucrative than those at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

How to become an Automotive Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

The salary for an automotive technician depends on several factors, including the type of employer, location, education level, and experience. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually.
