FAQ

Does it really matter what college I choose?

No, not really. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. But, there are better programs at some schools than others. Look elsewhere if you want something more niche.

How do I prepare for a mechanic apprenticeship?

It is important that you understand the ramifications of your actions. You should be familiar with the mechanics of cars, and how they work. This will make it easy to find the right place to start your first day in the garage.

You will also need to learn how to fix simple problems like tires and broken lights.

This should help you learn how to diagnose issues and repair them yourself.

To put the pieces back together, you will also need to understand how they fit together.

Finally, be proficient in using tools safely and efficiently.

These are all things that will make you a competent mechanic.

What is the distinction between a mechanic or an automotive technician?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. Both a mechanic and an automotive technician can repair cars.

A mechanic must possess good manual dexterity, and be able perform simple tasks efficiently. They should also be able correctly diagnose and repair any problems.

An automotive technician needs to be more technically skilled than a mechanic. They need to be able use tools such drills and wrenches, and read blueprints.

They should be able safely to perform complex procedures. They must be familiar with all types of electrical and engine systems.

They must also be able to understand how various parts interact with each other.

A mechanic typically earns less than an automotive technician. There are many job opportunities in both.

What are the requirements of an automotive technician?

High school graduation or GED is required with excellent grades in English and math. You must also be able to read, and write. To be allowed to work, you must pass a written and practical test.

What does it take for a mechanic to be a good one?

A mechanic is only an expert if they have years of experience. You can learn the most effective way to fix cars by learning from a professional mechanic.

You will spend time in a workshop learning everything you can about cars. Mechanical engineering books will be required to learn about mechanics and design.

Auto school is also required.

The most important thing to do is start early. Do not wait to learn automotive technology. Get started now if you are interested in becoming a mechanic.

What qualifications are required to become a mechanic

You will need to pass several exams in order to become a mechanic. These include:

  • A test of general knowledge
  • A practical examination
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests are meant to help you grasp the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and physics, before you begin your journey as a mechanic.

Once you pass these tests you can become a mechanic. An apprenticeship is still required. This will require you to learn the trade.

To learn all you can about vehicle repair, you will need to take classes and workshops. It will be necessary to work alongside experienced mechanics.

A mechanic must be highly focused and attentive to detail in order to succeed. Repairs to vehicles require you to pay attention to every detail.

To be a successful mechanic, patience and perseverance are essential. If you don’t enjoy following instructions, this might not be the right career path.

But if you love cars and enjoy fixing them, you could be very happy in this line of work.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
